Bio Sketch
Julio Bermudez is president of the Architecture, Culture and Spirituality Forum, an 800+ members (from 65 countries) organization, that he cofounded in 2007. He holds a Master of Architecture and a Ph.D. in Educaiton from the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Bermudez’s interests focus in the relationship between architecture, culture, and spirituality through the lens of phenomenology and neuroscience. He has widely lectured, led symposia, taught, published, or appeared in the media covering these areas, including a beautiful episode in National Geographic’s The Story of God with Morgan Freeman in 2019. Current projects include three neuro-phenomenological studies of sacred vs. secular architecture (supported by $1.5 M in grants from the Templeton Religion Trust). He has published three books: "Transcending Architecture. Contemporary Views on Sacred Space” (CUA Press, 2015), "Architecture, Culture, and Spirituality" (Ashgate, 2015, co-edited with Thomas Barrie and Phillip Tabb), and “Spirituality in Architectural Education” (CUA Press, 2023).

Bermudez has been teaching architectural design, communication, and theory for 40 years. He directed the Sacred Space and Cultural Studies graduate concentration at The Catholic University of America School of Architecture and Planning from 2010 to 2023, where he developed the Walton Studio, a world-class design studio that involved recognized architects from around the globe. Before this work and at the University of Utah (1993-2010), Bermudez investigated (1) the interaction between design process and computers, and (2) the use of architectural thinking to design data environments. Results of this effort were the award-winning and influential analog-digital design method, a successful information visualization study across multiple domains (attracting over $5M in funding), and a large number of lectures, workshops, patents, and publications in the U.S. and abroad. During this time, he co-created and co-led SiGraDi (Iberoamerican Society of Digital Graphics, 1997-2005) and an academic exchange program between Santa Fe-Argentina and Salt Lake City-Utah (1995-2010).

Bermudez has received several national and international recognitions, including the 1998 AIA Education Honors Award, the 2004-05 ACSA Creative Achievement Award, the 2005 Arturo Montagu Creative Career Prize (bestowed by Latin American SiGraDi), the 2006 ACADIA Award for Teaching Excellence, the 2010 Sasada Award for significant record in scholarship and service (conferred by CAADRIA, Asia), and the 2021 ACSA Distinguished Professor Award.

El Dr. Julio Bermúdez es el presidente del Architecture, Culture and Spirituality Forum, un groupo internacional de más de 800 miembros de 65 países que co-fundó en el 2007. Además de contar con el tíítulo de Arquitecto (Universidad Católica de Santa Fe, Argentina), Bermudez tiene una Maestría en Arquitectura y un Ph.D. en Educación de la University of Minnesota (USA).

El trabajo del arquitecto Bermúdez se enfoca en la relación entre arquitectura, cultura, y espiritualidad desde la fenomenlogía y neurociencia, temas sobre los cuales ha dado conferencias, dirigido simposios, publicado, o aparecidos en los medios en los Estados Unidos y el exterior, incluyendo un episodio de La Historia de Dios con Morgan Freeman de la National Geographic en 2019. Sus proyectos actuales incluyen tres estudios neurofenomelógicos del impacto cognitivo-estético de arquitecturas sagradas y seculares (finaciado por becas de US$ 1.5 milllones de la Templeton Religion Trust). El Dr. Bermúdez ha enseñado taller, representación y teoría arquitectónica por 40 años. Entre los años 2010 y 2023, Bermúdez dirigió la concentración de posgrado de Espacio Sagrado y Estudios Culturales en la School of Architecture and Planning de la Catholic University of America (Washington, DC, USA), donde creó el Taller Walton, un taller de diseño de alto nivel que incluía a un arquitecto de renombre internacional. Anteriormente y durante su residencia en la University of Utah (1993-2010), su trabajo se concentró en (1) la interacción entre proceso de diseño y medio digital, y (2) como diseñar ambientes informáticos interdisciplinariamente. El resultado de estos esfuerzos fueron un reconocido e influyente método y teoría de diseño análogo-digital, un exitoso program de investigación en multiples areas (que atrajo más de US$ 5 millones en becas, contratos, y proyectos), y un gran número de conferencias, cursos, patentes, y publicaciones. El Dr. Bermúdez ha recibido reconocimientos nacionales e internacionales como por ejemplo el Premio de Honor en Educación 1998 otorgado por el AIA (The American Institute of Architecture), el Premio de Realización Creativa 2004-05 dado por la ACSA (Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture), el Premio a la Trayectoria Creativa Arturo Montagu 2005 ofrecido por SIGraDi (Latino América), el Premio a la Exelencia Docente 2006 otorgado por ACADIA (Association for the Computer-Aided Design In Architecture), el Premio Sasada 2010 por el impacto significativo de su investigación y servicio en el ámbito internacional (dada por CAADRIA, Asia), y el galardón de Profesor Distinguido entregado por la ACSA en 2021.
